The Concept of "Skelly"
"Skelly" is an independently created animated series that explores the consequences of having skeletons in one's closet—quite literally. Living her mundane life, the overtired Sarah suddenly realizes that she has a skeleton living in her closet. Not only that, but the skeleton runs a bar. Skelly follows the off-kilter exploits of a 30-something woman who finds herself in this bizarre situation. However, no one believes her, leading Sarah to question her own sanity. Skelly, the skeleton, owns a bar that he runs out of her closet, frequented by people who have passed or are passing. Skelly often persuades Sarah into being a bar waitress during his many parties, which keep her awake. Kayla Davis is the creator of this show, and we are collaborating with her to bring this project to life. We plan to crowdfund the project entirely. In recent years, internetproduced animation has become more common, demonstrating that the medium can thrive outside of the studio system. Currently, we have completed the 30-second theme song, fully animated and finalized. Using this, we are working towards producing the pilot episode, with hopes of gaining enough funds through crowdfunding.
Characters and Their Personalities
Sarah Daveeda Kazner Voiced by LaKira Porter is a 38 year old African American and jewish woman with a unique appearance. She sports half sleepy eyes and knee length huper curly hair with two strands popping at the back of her head. while sarah is aware of skelly, the lively skelton who runs a supernatural bar in her closet, she becomes consumed by a burning desire to uncover Skelly's true identity and the circumstances of his death. Skelly B Bones voiced by Richard Kingston is the bartender at the Marrow and Bone Bar where chaos and cocktails collide. With a penchant for mayhem , skelly thrives on the lively atmosphere, mixing up drinks and strirring up drama. sporting a floating skull for a head and long elegant legs, skelly embodies the essence of a classy bartender.
Visual Design and Background Art
We blended elements of classic adult animated show aesthetics with a touch of horror and darkness, as Skelly is more centered around dialogue than action scenes. This approach influenced our character designs and background art. To ensure authenticity, we extensively researched bars by visiting several establishments to capture the lighting and atmosphere accurately. We spent hours sketching in corners rather than relying solely on online images, as obtaining numerous photos from a single bar proved challenging. For Sarah's room, we searched for images of middle-class African American homes online, as we were unable to visit such locations ourselves. Sarah works as a writer at a company called Quill, so we incorporated assets in her room that reflect her profession, aiming to imbue her environment with the essence of a writer's space. In the animated theme song, there's a long corridor where Sarah walks from her room to the door of the bar, Marrow and Bone. We chose to extend the corridor, turning it into an alleyway where the roof is never visible, creating an endless abyss. The neon light from the bar shines all the way to the closet door in her room, adding to the surreal atmosphere.
Animation Techniques
The animation utilized a combination of rigging and hand-drawn techniques. Rigging was employed for specific shots, such as when Sarah looks around as she walks through the corridor, serving as a seamless transition to the next shot. We aimed to achieve an almost 3D effect for the character by incorporating a five-point turn around, moving from a profile pose to a frontal pose. Unlike the typical profile, three-fourths, and front poses, we included two additional poses between these three to enhance the fluidity of movement
Storyboarding and Adaptation
Kayla provided a bullet-point script outlining key elements she wanted to include in the theme song. However, she granted us creative freedom to explore how to visually convey these elements. We dedicated significant time to brainstorming and generating thumbnail sketches. Once the sketches were approved, we progressed to creating the animatics. With the song already composed, we utilized its beats as a foundation for our visual storytelling. Understanding that Sarah, Skelly, and the bar were the main focal points, we concentrated most of the theme song's visuals on these elements. Additionally, we strategically crafted segments leading up to the bar to pique curiosity and capture viewers' interest.From bullet-point scripts to thumbnail sketches and animatics, the creation of "Skelly" is a collaborative endeavor fueled by creativity and passion. With the freedom to explore visual storytelling, the team behind "Skelly" crafts a narrative that resonates with audiences, blending humor, horror, and heartfelt moments into a seamless tapestry of entertainment.
